Los Alcornocales nature park

Rio Hozgarganta near Jimena de la Frontera

The river Hozgarganta is situated in the Cork Oak Nature Park (Los Alcornocales) in the Municipality of Jimena de la Frontera, Cadíz Province. The Rio Hozgarganta is known for its gigantic rocks in the river bed and outstanding natural untamed beauty. A nature lovers paradise especially for families. Along its 35 km course you can find many ideal locations for a picnic as well as rock pools to take a dip in the hot summer months.
You find various hiking routes in this area and it is a good way to get to know the Alcornocales Nature Park. The most popular one is near the village of Jimena de la Frontera and it takes you along the water   channel (El Cao) and The Royal Artillery bomb factory (Fabrica de bombas).

Just after the water canal El Cao there is a ideal spot to cool of.

A sandy beach is an ideal spot for a picnic and the water shallow for children to play in

but at times you will have to share the area with roaming horses and cows.

2nd suggestion:
This is a good family spot in the middle of the Los Alcornocales nature area. If you drive past Jimena de la Frontera and turn left towards Ubrique you come upon a marvelous picnic ground. It is a recreational area with wooden picnic tables set between the trees and a children play area.

We love the natural setting and followed a pathway through dense oleander bushes to reach the river.

A gigantic rock gave us an ideal picnic spot.
The children really loved the area.
